Defy

If you want to defy your school, but you don't want to do anything big quite yet, then this page is for you. It lists some easier ways to defy your school, while still getting your point across and maybe having some fun. Some of these were taken from School Survival.

  • Start your own underground newspaper or zine, or print off one you've found somewhere. You could also print off any content on this site and distribute it.
  • Survey students on what they think about a bunch of rules or regulations at your school, then give the results to the principal or other administrator.
  • Make up a report card for your school. Grade it on things like respect towards students, quality of classes, the state of their facilities, teacher kindness, or whatever else you can think of. Distribute copies of the final report to people or post them around the school.
  • Every time a teacher refers to a term or theory that most students above the age of six would be familiar with, ask what it means. The teacher will probably become frustrated and ask why you why you are purposely distubing the class or something, just respond by saying, "Your educational system is unfit to lick my boot, I see nothing in it that would be worth teaching me, so I refuse to be taught by it," or something along those lines
  • If school is getting even duller than usual and you feel an uncontrolable need to shake things up a bit (as I often do), then try playing a little practical joke. Pranks are fun, and a more light-hearted approach to defying school. Try not to do anything stupid that will get you labeled as "just another punk kid" by the faculty of the school or something stupid like that.
  • Try to get a group (the bigger the better) to refuse to take a test. This would likely be easier with standardized tests that don't count towards marks, since more students would be willing to participate. If your teacher asks why you are refusing to take the test, then tell him/her about your views on school. Even better, write about your views on the test, instead of actually doing the test.
  • Join with some student groups and protesters. They always appreciate any help that they get, and you don't even have to do that much to really help them out (if you want to do more though, by all means, please do). Just recognize what particular skills you have and utilise them against school.
  • If your school has a newspaper, then try to get involved in it. This might allow you to include sections like Student Opinions or something else awesome like that. Make sure to make it stand out, too.
  • Create a chart two columns. List all of the bad teachers (write closed-minded if you don't want to get in trouble for it) in one column, and list all of the good teachers on the other side. Hand this chart out to new students and/or freshmen as a warning. Teachers on the closed-minded list will likely get annoyed once they find out (and they probably will eventually).
  • This next point can be extremely awesome and get a strong point across if done correctly. Thanks to Stratovarius of the School Survival forums for this one. He explained it best, so I'll just quote him:

A cool way to defy school as Soul pointed out is to work on more advanced material than what you're covering in class. If I went back to school this is what I would do.

In Spanish class, learn Arabic or Russian.

In Algebra I, learn trigonometry or even higher if you dare.

In English class, read some heavy Russian literature like The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky or War and Peace by Tolstoy. Write an essay over it concerning what you thought about the novel and what you learned from it. Or you could pick up an intro to philosophy textbook and read that.

In computer anything related class, learn a programming language.

Etc... You get the idea. This is of course the hardest way to defy school, but one of the best that will absolutely embarrass your teachers and administration and leave them wondering what they should do about that kid that won't stop learning.

Oh and, you better go all or nothing if you're going to do this. If you half-ass it, it won't be effective at all and you'll get laughed at.

Study hard and don't do any of your homework. This is a nice "Fuck you." to the education system. I almost wish I was back in high school just so I could do this.
  • Try to incorporate anti-school messages in a lot of your schoolwork, especially in work that you eventually have to present in front of the class. That way you can get your message across to your teacher and a group of students simultaneously. And you won't be punished for this, unless your teacher is an extreme fascist.
  • If you have to recite the pledge or sing the national anthem, make up your own words to go along with them, and say those instead. If teachers yell at you for disrespecting your country, then explain your anarchist views. You do have anarchist views, right? ...Right?
  • Wear earplugs into class, and sit in the back corner of the room. If the teacher says anything to you about it, tell her/him that you're busy. You'll probably get punished, but it will leave a strong impression if you continue to do it anyways.
